Challenge.

The MTA Genius Challenge was an international competition challenging the industry to propose innovative solutions to modernise and improve the reliability of the New York City subway system.

CRC Changchun approached Fordyno to help them realise a new type of metro car, with the criteria that it needs to:

  • Integrate future technologies.

  • Adaptable design for lifecycle upgrades.

  • Be designed to reduce energy consumption.

  • Enhance the passenger experience.

Fordyno was given a blank sheet to start from.

Approach

Detailed bid development work was conducted in collaboration with CRC Changchun to bring together the bid proposal, resulting in a winning submission for the prominent rolling stock manufacturer.

Following the winning bid Fordyno’s industrial design team worked closely with CRC Changchun’s internal design team to develop several exterior and drivers cab concepts embodying the Fuxing philosophy.

Following this the preferred design was taken in to detailed design to ensure technical and engineering compliance whilst retaining the design intent established with the concept design phase.

Collaborate to Innovate.

The development approach led by Fordyno started with the exploration of new layouts, technologies and materials culminating in multiple concepts.

Ideas were adapted, developed or dropped in collaboration with the design and engineering team at CRC Changchun.

An award winning conclusion.

The submission put forward by CRC Changchun went on to win the challenge 2 category.

CRC went on to create a prototype demonstrator, built within their Changchun factory, allowing engineers to thrash out the concepts proposed for maintenance, easy installation, ease of use and passenger experience.
